Stephen Conway (BSc Sociology and Social Research, Newcastle Upon Tyne Polytechnic: 1984; MSc Sociology, University of Salford: 1991) teaches Sociology in the Department of Applied Social Science at the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside. This article is based on a consultancy project carried out by the Centre for Social Research located in the department. He set up the Centre and acted as Principal Researcher on the project. His main research interests are in social attitudes to ageing, illness and death and he is currently writing up a PhD thesis in this area. Other papers include 'All Out of Perspective' (1995) Health Service Journal, and with Jenny Hockey 'Resisting the Mask of Old Age: the social meaning of health beliefs in later life' (1998) Ageing and Society.
