Susan Leigh Star is Associate Professor in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She is also faculty in the Women's Studies Program. She received her Ph.D. from the University of California, San Francisco, where her advisor was Anselm Strauss. Her recent research is in social informatics: the organizational, cultural and practice-based aspects of information systems and information infrastructure. With Geoffrey Bowker, she co-directs the Illinois Research Group on Classification, which is investigating the history, ethics and sociology of large-scale medical classification. She is the author of Regions of the Mind: Brain Research and the Quest for Scientific Certainty (Stanford, 1989) and editor of The Cultures of Computing (Blackwell, 1995) and Ecologies of Knowledge: Work and Politics in Science and Technology (SUNY, 1995).
