John McManus

John is a PhD candidate in Social Anthropology. His research focuses on migration and popular culture, especially sport, music and social media, and in particular the countries of Turkey and Iran. His doctoral thesis revolves around the mapping of transnational footballing networks across Turkish diaspora communities in Europe. Based on online social network analysis, life story interviews and ethnographic fieldwork in London and Cologne, it seeks to help redefine notions of belonging and identity in 21st century diaspora communities. He graduated with an MPhil in Middle Eastern Studies from Oxford University and holds an undergraduate degree in English Literature and History from Sheffield University.
